Met Samantha Bee Tuesday night

Samantha BeeWhile on a photo walk with Jerry Tuesday night, we ran into The Daily Show's Samantha Bee. She was with her child and I certainly didn't want to harass her so I just said "Excuse me, aren't you Samantha Bee from The Daily Show?"

She said yes and I mentioned I watch that show regularly. She was nice and friendly.

"The Daily Show" is one of my favorite shows, but I think It's sad state of the News industry that the most intelligent conversations on TV are on "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central. If you have any doubt, See the recent interview of Sen. John McCain or Former Iraq Minister Ali Allawi or Andy Card just to name a few.

SELinux and Type Enforcement

FedoraAs some people know, one of the many hats I wear on the job is security. That being the case, I figured I should learn SELinux.

Turns out, Easier said than done. If your doing anything unusual (What are the odds in my case?) you need to make Policies and ensure that the programs are the proper file context with the proper access. Think of a default deny firewall and you'll see the issue. Nothing is allowed unless permission is explicitly given. Fedora comes with a lot of default policies, but for unusual web server CGI scripts, chances are you need to write a policy for it.

1st problem: I don't have the proper package to create policies and install them. A little research and I find I need "selinux-policy-devel".

$ yum install selinux-policy-devel

2nd Problem: While I'm familiar with Type Enforcement, I have no idea what rights to give each application. The only way I know of finding out what rights each app needs is to run it, and see what audit errors pop up in the log.

3rd problem: I'm not used to the syntax of the policy files, or the various types and classes that I need to use to grant the exact access I need.

After a few hours work: I mostly configured ONE application. This is going to be a long project…

Yard Work

YardIt’s that time of year again to do yard work. This year, I’m trying something a little different. The photo to the right show blue green stuff all over my yard. That’s “Scotts® PatchMaster® Sun & Shade Mix” which is Grass seed with fertilizer and recycled paper as a mulch. It’s a simple idea: Any places that need patching, rake the dirt, put this down on it and watter for a few weeks.

In actuality, It’s a lot of work. My backyard lawn is better than last year, but that’s not saying too much. Since the Mrs. and I like to occasionally entertain with a BBQ, I figured I better do something about it. The Patch mix has to be watered every day for at least a couple of weeks in order to get it to take. When the grass is thick enough, the paper should be absorbed into the ground.

In the mean time. it looks really weird…

I’ve also planted vegetables again. This year:

  • 9 broccoli plants
  • 2 sweet basil plants
  • 2 Greek oregano plants
  • 1 cherry tomato plant
  • 2 rows of Mesclun mixed salad
  • 1 row of regular lettuce
  • 1 Strawberry plant

Should be good when done. This photo is just opposite the one above.

Upgraded MT…

Movable TypeNot so painful as last time I upgraded. In fact, other than backing up my DB and BLOG, it was fairly painless and done via a command line.

All the plugins I care about seem to be working ok. So far…

NYC Pillow fight at Union Square

Friends??

Originally uploaded by S.D..

Newmindspace organized another massive pillow fight in Union Square park. I can't begin to tell you how much fun this event was. I haven't laughed that hard for that long  in quite some time.

I drove in and got to the Union Square early to get parking. I was able to scope out some good places to hang out and meet some people before the Pillow Fight actually started. As 2:00pm approached it got pretty crowded and when the whistle blew, the feathers started to fly. My original plan was to take shots from the edge of the crowd with my Nikon D80 and then wander in using my point and shoot camera. Since the point and shoot camera takes too long between shots, I threw caution to the wind and kept using the D80. Wading into the crowd was like walking thru a big mosh pit. Amazingly, I only got hit about a dozen times and that tended to be when someone was taking a wide back swing. Using continuous shooting on my camera, I managed to take over 700 shots. I'm sure lots of them don't show much,  but I'm using DXO Optics 4.1 to batch process the RAW NEF files. It's very good software, supports my camera and lens, and the Batch mode is what convinced me to buy it. For $149, you can't go wrong with it. I have an old PC so I started the batch late last night and it's still going. When it's done, I'll pick out the good ones and post them to Flickr.

For a crazy massive pillow fight, people were very careful not to hit the photographers cameras. Other than a couple of minor hits, the camera survived intact. I ran into Gene in the middle of the crowd, but missed the other NYC Social members that were there.

I posted my shots on Flickr

Newmindspace has updated the site with links to Video and Flickr Photos too. I particularly liked  Rocketboom which has a great video of the event, including footage from above. Wish all battles were Pillow Fights…

You know your getting old when…

When someone you last saw as a little girl years ago is now a pretty young lady.

It seemed like only yesterday that I helped her father build a swing set in their backyard, and now she's a college student and an actress guest staring on two different prime time television shows.

I went to college with her aunt (who was at my wedding) and have known that entire family for a long time. Recently, we got a Christmas card from them and I called them up to see how they are all doing. It was really nice to catch up after all this time and we'll all have dinner  in a couple  of weeks.

Off hand, 2007 is starting right.

Slight update on the MG Rick Dias

My brother asked me to keep the progress on my model on my web log so here it is. Above is a photo of the Maroon parts on bamboo skewers for holding while I spray on surface primer. Below is the results afterwards.

Spray painting can be a bit of a pain in winter as you need to have a window open to properly ventilate the fumes. In this case, I had a window open and a fan on as well.  Once these are done, I'll paint the gray parts, reassemble the model, detail and put on a clear coat.

Gothamist's year-end holiday party

Also, if you get the chance to go to the Cronkite Pizzeria & Wine Bar, do so. All the Pizza was very good and they stock a very nice Côtes du Rhône wine that I must go back to get the name…

DxO Optics Pro V4

DXOUpon attending a session of my Wife's photography class, the professor, Chuck Delaney made reference to DxO Optics Pro being good software for processing images. It's available for Trial download and supports many different Camera/Lens combinations.

Unfortunately, it does not yet support my AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm in combination with my Nikon D80. But it does support the Nikon D70s with that  lens, so I used an image I took in August as a test. It does support the D80 so the other functions worked very well, just not Automatic Lens correction.

Basically, I fired it up, loaded the image and let it go to work. The results are pretty good and took a lot less time if I were doing it via Photoshop.

I also used it to Batch process close to a hundred photos I took at a Birthday party. With the exception of three photographs where the Flash didn't fire, everything looked great. It automatically processed my NEF files (I shoot in RAW),  got the White Balance just about perfect and Skin tones looked good too. If I were shooting a wedding (several hundred images, easily) I'd want to use this software as it was very easy to set up.

Since it doesn't support my Camera/Lens combination yet, I'll hold off, but once it does I'm sure thinking about it. The price it's going for isn't bad and it worked fin with my Old Desktop PC (circa 2001) running a Pentium 4 and 1 GB of RAM.

Gorillapod SLR Zoom

Gorillapod SLR Zoom

I pretty much carry my camera everywhere and occasionally come across a situation where I suddenly need a tripod but don't have one as my regular tripod was left at home.

An actual example: It suddenly rained and the streets were nice and reflective. The view from one of my managers office has a good angle on Park Avenue South, but to really get a good shot, I like to take a long exposure. Without a tripod, it's impossible for me to keep the camera that steady.

While attending the 2006 Photo Plus Expo  this past Friday,  I came upon Joby demonstrating their new Gorillapod Pro (Since renamed the Gorillapod SLR-Zoom) and was impressed enough to buy one.

Short Review
: I really like it. Will the Gorillapod replace my regular Tripod? Nope, but I'll keep it in my bag for those many times when I need steady base for my camera.

More details after the break.
