NYC Social meetup for April 2008

Fun with Off the Camera Flash

Originally uploaded by S.D.

Went out to Kanvas for the Flickr NYC Social meet. We try to meet every month to hang out and goof around. I’ve met many nice people on Flickr and hang out whenever I can.

I recently figured out how to get my SB-800 flash to work off the Nikon D80 camera as a remote flash. Naturally we had to take photos like this one.

Amusing Sony Advertisement

Saw this on Techeblog.com.

From Techeblog:

The world’s largest foam machine was custom-built for the shoot, and pumped out over 500,000 gallons of foam per minute. The commercial is for Sony’s cameras, and locals got Alpha DSLRs, Cyber-shots, and Handycams to shoot the experience

Looks like fun but I’m wondering how they cleaned up afterwards? I bet this is the same people who did the Bouncing Balls advertisement in San Francisco.

Nothing at the moment.

Improv Everywhere: Best Game Ever

Improv Everywhere gave a Little league team the “Best. Game. Ever.

They turned a little league baseball game in Hermosa Beach, California into a major league event complete with NBC Sports, Jumbotron, Player interviews, *and* the Good Year Blimp!

Apparently, I Do Take a lot of photos

Last night, while covering a Charity Poker tournament, I shot my 20,000th photo on my Nikon D80. I discovered this using a program I wrote in PERL to copy my image files from my SD cards to my PC. It puts a little summary at the end and extracts info from the image files EXIF info.

In this case, Nikon stores the shutter count in the image (That and other info effectively gives the image a serial number!) which I list in the summary. In this case, since getting my D80 on August 10th, 2006, I’ve taken 20,004 images. Granted, I don’t take as many as I used to, but I guess that is a lot.

Upgraded to WordPress V2.5

Upgraded to WordPress V2.5. Other than visual enhancements of the management interface, it seems to be very similar to V2.3.3. Other than one gotcha (fixed), it was pretty straight forward.

GW Bush’s First proposed monument?

sealweb.jpgI first saw this on SFist the other day and nearly laughed out loud. Basically, people want to “honor” President GW Bush by naming a public building after him. In this case, they want to rename the “Oceanside Wastewater Treatment Facility” to the “George W Bush Sewage Plant”.

As SFist says, Genius. I wonder if it will make the Ballot in California?

Gardening time is here again

brocolli.jpgSpring is here so It’s time to prepare my vegetable garden again. With all the tasks at work (4 Projects Due at the same time *AND* late night calls 4 to 6 days a week…) I’m really looking forward to doing work that my wife and I can enjoy.

Also, for our garden, we’ve planted new mixed color peonies. That was a little amusing as my wife got the little shovel, put on gloves, dressed in old jeans in case it got dirty and then I did all the work.

She’s ready for a career in management…

Modifying PageView Plugin for my needs

Recently, I needed to insert an IFRAME into a post. I could just insert the IFRAME code into the post, but the Tiny MCE editor chewed it up and occasionally would blow up. Looking for a WP Plugin that handles IFRAME’s, I came across John Godley’s PageView plugin. I like how it’s written and presented, but I wanted it take all the IFRAME parameters and not always have a header. So I modified the following files:
pageview/pageview.php
pageview/pageview.css
pageview/view/pageview/pageview.php

[pageview src=”//www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22425001/vp/23601329#23601329″ frameborder=”0″ height=”339″ scrolling=”no” width=”100%”]

Done via my modifications:
[ pageview src="//www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22425001/vp/23601329#23601329" frameborder="0" height="339" scrolling="no" width="100%" ]
If “src=” is in the plugin string, my modification will make an assumption that the entire string is the IFRAME parameters. As I don’t do any error checking, this could be potentially dangerous but it suits my needs.

Done via original 3 parameters:

This will use any defaults in the CSS file and in the case of the MSNBC IFRAME doesn’t work too good. This isn’t a deficiency of the plugin, it’s a good plugin doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. On top of that, the Code is well written and easy to read which made it easy for me to find the exact spot to modify for my needs.

After not an inch of Snow in January, It’s Snowing now…

Snowed In!

Naturally after no snow in January, Mother Nature decides to give us several inches of snow overnight. In my case, I can telecommute from home, so I’m not adversly affected, but If I took my usual bus in to work, I’d be on the bus now instead of VPN’ing in.

This was taken 15 minutes after I shoveled my walk.

Conversion to WordPress write up

Epyon-1.com CPU under WordPress

Above you see the main reason I switched to WordPress. Under MT, the CPU was pegged much of the day literally making the server unusable. As far as I know, most of the MT was SPAM trackbacks and SPAM comment attempts. Likely I could have tweaked my Web server/MT installation, but frankly it was more work than I cared for.

Some people asked me how much work was required to convert from MT to WordPress. My brother wrote up the procedure on his blog, “Mostly Harmless“, here. He spent a lot of time (2 Days?) getting it perfect and I’m grateful as WordPress has been a much better experience fro me.

Also, he wants me to create a WordPress plugin using PHP. Should be fun and I’ll write it up as I develop it.
