Good bye, Martin Cat.

I wasn’t going to write about this but after typing it up, I realized that writing it helps.

One of the worst duties of a pet owner is that you sometimes have to put them down. In 1989, I paid for Martin at a Pet Shop around 60th and Lexington Ave. Now, 16 years later, he took ill. Specifically, his Kidneys stop working and he stopped eating and drinking Thursday night.

Let me tell you, Knowing this does not make it any easier. We have a responsibility to keep pets safe and free from suffering. Even knowing this, when the time comes to do the right thing, It’s still very difficult.

We took him to the Vet this morning and he slipped away quietly with two of us there. He never liked Vets and after having him for 16 years, being there was the least we could do. If you don’t have a pet, you don’t know how comfortable they are to have around and how their sudden loss really sucks. I could write Pages and Pages about all the funny things Martin would do that would make us laugh. When we first got him, my brother was only 7 years old. He’d mangle Martin and the Cat would start purring like crazy. Years later, he’d patiently let my Niece and Nephew mangle him too.
This was just the tip of the iceberg.

The annoying thing is, I never took that many pictures of Martin. One of us would sit down and he’d just jump up in our lap to make himself comfortable (People were furniture to him). I’ll have to dig up any old pictures I have of him. I guess I took for granted that he’d be there, but of course, all things must pass.
